Candid photography is the most common type of picture that is taken. Mainly because you do not have to own any digital camera accessories. This is like taking point and shoot pictures. But, it is also the type of picture that most people have the most trouble taking.

These type of pictures are generally of people that are not staged, posed, or planned. It can be used to capture the moments of everyday life that sometimes go unnoticed or to immortalize the details of momentous occasions.

They can show images of giggling children opening presents on Christmas morning or the tired face of a soldier returning from war. These are photographs that capture the real lives of
people around us.

Observe

You will most likely want to pull out the ol’ camera and take pictures at family reunions, parties, birthday parties, weddings, or some other special occasion. So watch your surroundings and find the picture you want to take.

If you are in a foreign country, you may want to take some pictures of the people and culture of the area.

Capturing the unguarded, unposed moments can result in fabulous photographs.

Anticipate

Since candid shots are not planned, you will need to be very aware of what your subject is doing. As with action photography, it helps to anticipate the action, so that you are ready to
capture it.

If your camera has a continuous shooting mode, use it! With digital cameras, it is fine to take as many pictures as you can, which will increase the likelihood of capturing that one perfect shot. You can always delete the extra pictures later.

Plan

Pay attention to your camera settings — you will get the best photos if you use a fast shutter speed, since you will probably be taking pictures of people while they are moving around.

Red Eyes

Getting red eyes is one of the most common problems related to taking candid photos. There are a couple of ways to prevent red eyes.

One way to change the angle of the shot. Do not shoot straight into the face of a person at close range.

The second way is to use a “flash de-fuser” on your camera. If you can not find one for your camera -  you can also place a finger in front of the flash, about a half-inch away from the camera body.

Equipment

It would be best if you use a lightweight camera.

If you are using a DSLR camera, using a strong zoom lens will also let you stay further away from your subjects while still getting a good close-up shot.

Another piece of equipment you might want to look into, is a mono-pod. These are just lightweight tripods. These may help with camera shake, which causes blurred pictures. But, you have to use them the correct way, and not move the mono-pod around. It is should just be used for support.

If you have a lot of digital photography accessories, you will need to get a camera bag. That way you will have all your equipment in one place.

You can not take the perfect candid shot if you do not have your camera with you! So be sure to bring your camera with you whenever possible.

Normally, someone taking out their camera is a signal for folks to pose and pull out the “plastic” smiles. If you keep your camera out and at the ready, your subjects are more likely to relax and just be themselves.

Digital photography is a great way to save memories of one’s life and times. Most of these pictures will be candid shots.

Candid photography is probably the easiest form of photography around. It requires no additional digital photography accessories. You can use any kind of camera – from point-and-shoot to digital SLR, for your photos.

Digital Photography Accessories

Use a tripod to prevent camera shake, this will keep you from getting blurry pictures. They can also allow you, if you are the one taking the photo, to be included in the picture.

Digital image editing software allows you to make changes to your photos. These range from a basic software that usually only lets you crop and rotate images, to the advanced which allows you to make changes to the actual image.

Flash

The full flash function on your digital camera is not a cure-all for every lighting challenge. In fact, using a full flash can create unwanted shadows or throw too much light onto your subject.

Turn off your digital camera’s automatic flash if the subject is shiny or set against mirrors, or if you’re taking pictures through a window. Using a flash in these situations will create
reflections or even completely overexpose your subject.

General Tips

Get sharper digital pictures of off-center subjects by locking the focus. This will tell your camera what part of the picture to focus on. First, center your main subject in the viewfinder.
Press the shutter button down halfway and wait for the focus-OK lamp (it will glow in green in the viewfinder eyepiece). Then move your camera as desired to create the composition and take the photo.

Getting a unique perspective on a shot can be as easy as changing your angle. Instead of simply standing and shooting, try different positions: kneel down and angle up, lie down and shoot directly above you or stand on a ladder or other sturdy object and look down.

When taking photos of people or pets, red-eye (or green-eye with animals) is a common problem. Try to prevent it by adjusting your angle when taking pictures. A slightly different angle will help avoid light from bouncing to the camera lens. You can also direct your subject to not look directly into the camera lens.

Most people take pictures in color, as that is the default color setting on their digital cameras. But don’t forget about black & white or sepia photos! Different color settings can add an
extra punch to an otherwise boring photo and can also capture a beauty not expressed in a color photo. Learn where the color setting is located on your digital camera so you can easily switch it when taking photos.

Have the right camera. Many of the techniques listed here will require functions that are not available on certain cameras. It is possible to get acceptable pictures with a “point and shoot” camera, but for superior results, you will want an SLR or DSLR camera. Some DSLRs even have pre-programmed functions for taking action photos with minimal effort.

Sports

Baseball games, football games and other sporting events provide action-packed opportunities for taking photos. You’ll get more compelling shots by getting closer to the game. Unless you have a powerful zoom on your camera, move as close as you can to the field so you are able to capture the faces of athletes and zero in on a single aspect of the action rather than the entire playing field.

You’ll need to adjust your camera’s shutter speed depending on how you want to capture your action shots. If you want to stop the action and achieve a clear image, you need to shoot at a faster shutter speed. If you want to see the blur of motion, the shutter speed should be slower.

A useful photo tip for sports photography is to know the subject. If you are shooting a football game, for example, it is extremely useful to have a working knowledge of the game. This will enable you to predict when and where certain action will take place, so you can get a better shot.

For action shots, practice following a moving subject (panning). If you see something happening and try to move immediately to the action, you run the risk of getting a blurry shot or missing the shot altogether. By panning, you follow the subject while looking through the viewfinder, and simply release the shutter when you are ready.

If you want to shoot multiple images in a very short span of time, as in the case of action photography, you will want to get a camera that is capable of capturing a high number of “frames per second” or fps.

For action photography, find a good vantage point. Make sure you have an uninterrupted line of sight to the subject area.

When photographing sporting events, be invisible. Fans and players do not appreciate you obstructing their view while you try to get a shot, so be aware of your position at all times. Also, try to avoid shooting with flash if doing so will be distracting to players, coaches, or fans. Remember, you are there to record the event, but not at the expense of disrupting the action or disturbing the participants.

Software

Cropping is one of the easiest edits you can make to improve a digital photo. In your editing program, select the crop tool, click on the photo and drag to create a box around the area you want to keep. Focus on what is important in the photo and leave out distractions in the background. Press Enter and your photo is cropped.

When using photo editing software such as Adobe Photoshop to enhance your photos, be sure to save any changes to a new file so that you don’t permanently lose your original photo. Simply save your original file as a copy so you can have the freedom to experiment and tweak.

In photo editing programs like Photoshop, the toolbox includes more features than initially displayed. A little black arrow in the corner of a button indicates that there are additional tools lurking beneath the basic ones shown.

By using these techniques and tips, you should see better pictures. Also, if you can invest in some digital photography accessories, I would suggest doing so.

In this article, I will cover some very simple techniques to shoot better pictures.

Most people tend to shoot their photos in the horizontal position. One reason why this may hold true is, because of the way our eyes are set to focus, on the horizontal line. So, it is a
natural view of our World.

Most digital cameras are set up to take horizontal photos, to mimic this phenomena. Vertical photos are taken less frequently, as it requires you to turn the camera sideways to capture a vertical image.

Learning how to hold your digital camera, in different situations, will make your photos look their very best.

The following guidelines will help you decide whether or not to take horizontal or vertical photos.

Horizontal Photos

1. To convey a sense of vastness. Horizontal photos can convey the magnitude of a certain environment. Also, placing a small subject in a large setting can be used to suggest solitude.

2. When the subject of the photo is greater in width than in height.

3. When your subject is gazing to the right or left, leave extra room in your photo to the side of the subject’s gaze.

4. When the subject is moving horizontally, it enhances the idea of motion in the photograph. You should leave more space in your photo to the side towards which the subject is moving.

Vertical Photos

1. Vertical photos draw a viewer’s attention to a single subject by removing all peripheral, and non-essential matter.

2. When the subject is greater in height than in width. Turn your digital camera sideways when taking photos.

3. If a subject is looking up or down. Leave extra space at the top or bottom of your photo in the direction of the subject’s stare.

4. When the subject is moving vertically, as to enhance its upwards or downwards motion. When taking pictures like this, be sure to leave extra space in the photograph in the direction
of the subject’s motion.

Digital photography is all about experimenting, trying different camera settings and different angles. Horizontal and vertical photos each have their own advantages.  So the next time you are taking photos, evaluate the surroundings, your subject, and what you want the focus of your picture to be.

Here are some simple tips that should help you take better photos:

1. When taking photos, pay careful attention to what appears in the background. Eliminate distracting backgrounds by looking through view finder or LCD screen to see what will be included in the image.

2. One of the most basic photo tips in composing an interesting photo, position the main subject off center. Visualize a tic-tac-toe grid in your viewfinder. Instead of leaving your subject directly in the middle of that grid, move your digital camera to the left or right, or up or down so it appears at an intersection of one of the gridlines.

3. Look at the front of your digital camera – there should be a little round lamp, perhaps near the flash. This is the AF Assist Lamp. It helps to lock the focus when taking photos in dim lighting. Avoid covering it with your finger.

4. To focus attention on a single subject, take the photo vertically. A vertical composition will reduce the amount of distractions and unnecessary elements that appear in the background of the photo.

5. One of the easiest photo tips to follow when taking photos with digital cameras is this: experiment! You can easily delete any digital photos that you don’t like, so don’t be afraid to try a weird angle or use one of the camera’s many photo options.

6. Shutter lag can delay your photo being taken at the right time, this will cause you to miss that perfect action shot. Avoid it by first pressing the shutter button only halfway, to prepare the shot, then press it the rest of the way to complete the shot. This will keep your  images from blurring, or missing the shot all together.

Cell Phone Camera

7. Before taking photos with your cellphone camera, check the phone’s picture quality feature and set it to the highest resolution available. A photo taken at a lower resolution might look fine when viewing it on your phone, but once you view the photo on a computer screen, you’ll see a big difference in quality.

8. When taking photos with your camera phone, get as close to your subject as possible. Most phones don’t have a powerful, quality zoom feature.

9. Since cell phones are in use – or jostled around in purses and pockets – every day, the camera part of the phone is at a greater risk for dirt or damage. Use a soft cloth to clean the lens of dirt, dust, and fingerprints. When not in use, keep your camera phone in a protective case.

Flash

10. For many cameras, the flash is only good for about 10 feet, if you take digital photos from farther away, they may come out too dark. Check your camera’s manual to confirm. If you’re not sure, stay within 10 feet of your subject when taking pictures.

11. If you get to close using flash, you may get a glare or reflection off the subject. If you notice this, use a flash defuser. If you do not have a flash defuser, put a finger in front of  the flash about 1/2 inch. Do not put it against the flash.

Hopefully, these tips will help you take better pictures. You do not need a lot of digital photography accessories, though they do help. Some cameras do not made with their use in mind. The tip I like the best is #5…experiment.
