Digital Camera Lenses
There are many styles digital camera lenses to choose from, they can range from the Super Telephoto lenses to the standard lenses that come with the camera. They can range in uses from long range photos to close-ups photos. Some can be used for special effects.
Listed here are a few of the different types of digital camera lenses:
Standard Lenses
Standard lenses produce an image exactly as it appears to the human eye. The quality is excellent, while also being inexpensive. It is smaller and lighter than other lenses, and allows photos to be taken in low-light situations. These lenses do not offer telephoto or wide-angle applications.
Telephoto Lenses
A telephoto lens brings the subject of the picture closer. The telephoto lens has a focal length that is longer than 55mm, but typically starts out at 70mm and range up to 300mm. A short telephoto lens, such as a 70mm, will allow you to take excellent portraits. It will let you take good head and shoulder shots without moving in close to your model. A longer lens, such as a 210mm or 300mm, will let you see further, so you can photograph sports events or wild animals from a distance. There are two important limitations to remember when using telephoto lenses. They tend to shorten your depth of focus and they are more predisposed to camera shake. So you may have to use a tripod when using this lens.
Wide Angle Lenses
A wide lens captures a wider range of the background than what the human eye will see. Wide angle lenses are popular for landscape photography and large group shots. They are very useful when taking photos inside, when you may not be able to back up. Since the lens has a tendency to distort the edges of your photograph, wide-angle and ultra-wide angle lenses can be used to create special effects. Anything that is close to the lens will appear excessively large in comparison to the rest of the picture.
Macro Lenses
A macro lens is used for close-up photography.
Fisheye Lenses
The fisheye lens is used for special effects. A fisheye lens uses an angle of view up to 180 degrees. The angle distorts the photograph so the four sides appear to be farther away.
Zoom Lenses
Unlike a fixed-focal-length lens, a zoom lens gives you the option of shooting subjects both near and far. Zoom lenses suffer a slight loss in quality over fixed-length lenses but make up for the difference in quality by their usefulness in different situations.
Super Telephoto Lenses
The super telephoto lenses are mainly used by professional photographers. These lenses reach out great distances, and brings the brings the subject closer. They are mainly used by sports and wildlife photographers. They are quite heavy to use and the cost is very prohibitive for the hobbyist and amateur photographers.
These are just a few of the many types of digital camera lenses available. I will be doing more reviews and articles on other lenses later. So check back often!
